SPATIAL EXPLANATION

This section explains the programme and design of the building on the third development

IN DETAIL
PROGRAMME FLOW
The arrangement of spaces

The garden takes up most of the ground floor and it situated close to the street. This will help filter the polluted air slightly. Also, the other reason to make sure it has maximum amount of sunlight.

The pottery and artist studio will be located here because it is more private and less noisy. Therefore it will be more calm of the artists.

Cafes and shops are located here because it is more of a public area.

The Garden is located here to allow light into the underground as well as giving an interesting eating experience.

The restaurant is located at the bottom because most of the area on top are occupied by the allotments.

The connection to hall

Stretford Hall has quite a number of toilets. It would be efficient for my building to use the existing toilets available. Therefore, this creates a connection between my building and the hall.

UTILIZING THE HALL'S TOILET

A BETTER WALKING EXPERIENCE

People often walk at this path. It’s the path from the subway and the existing condition of the site is quite mundane. Therefore, I decided to make it more exciting by having a cafe for them to get their morning coffee and 2 small art shops for them to discover new things while they pass by.

Explanation of each space
Garden

The garden is located at the side of the site where drivers would be able to see. Hence, when they pass by they will see the greeneries of the area and it would be a nice experience for them. The allotments are there to filter the air of Kingsway as well.

STORAGE

There will be a storage area to store the equipment for planting.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLE STORES

The stores are located closely to the garden. When people pass by they could see people planting and selling fresh fruits and vegetables.

The garden will not only allow people to get close to nature but plants grown will help filter the air at Kingsway.

GARDEN

Pottery and art

The artist space is located behind the hall. The space is more private compare to rest of the site, which is why I decided to place it there. The art space contains a private garden for the artist as well. Also, there is an extra space for the existing artist from Stretford hall. This creates a more whole art space instead of just pottery making.

KILN AND STORAGE

The is located in between the workshop and the pottery studio so it will be more efficient to burn the clay and then store it.

STORAGE

There will be a space just for the artist to make their work.

WORKSHOP

The workshop is used for people who want to learn pottery making.

PRIVATE GARDEN

The private garden is for the artist enjoyment. I wanted it to be separated from the allotment so that the artist can get their own nature space.

This space is for the existing artist in Stretford Hall. It will be a much spacious space compared to the old studio they have and this is linked to the pottery studio.

STRETFORD ARTIST STUDIO

Art Shops
Cafe - Ground

There are 2 art shops near the subway. One is higher than the other one due to the slop. The reason for having these shops is so that the artist could sell their work and the shops also give a much better walking experience for the passerby.

The cafe on the top floor are for the passerby and the people after finishing their gardening. There are few tables located outside of the cafe too to give an outdoor experience.

The cafe extend to the basement level too and it is linked to the restaurant. There is also a toilet catered for the cafe which is also for the restaurant as well.

Cafe - Basement

ART SHOPS

The two shops here sell artworks.

OUTDOOR CAFE

There is also an outdoor cafe to look at the greeneries and allotments.

CAFE

There is a cafe on the ground floor. Also another space to improve the experience of the passerby.

TOILET

The toilet here is for the cafe users at this level.

UNDERGROUND CAFE

This cafe links to the restaurant on the basement

Restaurant

The whole basement of the building is for the restaurant. People who pass by will be intrigued with what is going on underground. The kitchen are the same concept as the market stalls and the dining are is filled with long tables that are movable. Also, there is garden in the middle to allow chef to grow their own herbs for the dishes.

INDOOR GARDEN

The garden can be a dining area too. The garden is placed here  to allow the cooks to get their fresh ingredients. Besides, the eating experience will be quite calming with the nature around.

Toilet space for the restaurant users.

TOILET

The space is located here so it is much closer to the outside. This allow easy removal of the waste.

CLEANING AND STORAGE

DINING AREA

The dining area is quite spacious and the table arrangement can be random depending on the users. However, the tables used here are long to spark conversations between strangers.

The stalls are surrounding the dining area. There will be drinks section and food sections.

Lighting Strategy
Roof lighting
Floor openings

The roof has opening at the top to allow light into the space. It should shine through to the underground as well, making sure the plant life and sustainable.

Some parts of the underground do not have natural lighting. Therefore, I decided to place openings on the ground floor. There will be trees in the openings as well.
