Development 1

Develop from iteration 1
I decided to improve further on my iteration 1 as I feel that the design suits well with the housing context and I wanted to create a village like atmosphere. Also, based on my programme where there are multiple functions to show the process of food making, the individual spaces are there to show the different communities existing in my building but are all working together to help create a bigger one.

Development 3
First Form
The form of this building splits into two main spaces. The ground floor is single space where the restaurant and kitchen spaces are, and the top roof floor is the individual block spaces where the pottery and garden spaces are.

Programme explanation
Strengths
Weaknesses
1) The restaurant's lively and active atmosphere could be seen instantly due to being exposed on the ground floor.
2) All the other space that are private like the pottery and art studios are located on the top floor, creating a clear separation of the public and private.
3) The building connects to the Stretford Hall on the ground floor, creating a much smoother transition from the old to the new. The people on the top floor of the Hall could enter the roof top garden too.
1) More considerations are needed on the form of the ground floor since it is currently quite simple.

2) Although it is connected to the Stretford Hall, the individual spaces could be more connected to the hall instead of separating them from it.

3) The elevated ground floor didn't manage to create the village like atmosphere. However, this can be improved more if some of the individual solid starts from the ground instead of the rooftop.

Second Form
Ground Floor
Roof Top

Strengths
Weaknesses
1) After moving the restaurant spaces below the ground, the design is much more closer to the concept I initially thought of.
2) Besides, it creates an interesting underground dining experience which is something new for the public.
3) Placing some of the spaces underground allows me to connect to the hall's basement which allow the new building connect to the old more.
1) The underground space is too dark due to not enough light entering the space. This might need more changes to allow light enter in.

2) In addition, I realize I'm using too much space since a second basement is introduced.

3) Also, the active and lively atmosphere of the dining experience will not be easily seen by the public since it is located underground.

Programme explanation
Since the previous one didn't show much of the village concept, I decided to push the restaurant space from the ground floor to the basement. Hence, the previous roof top spaces will now be on the ground floor, which creates a more village like design.

Third Form
Programme explanation
Strengths
Weaknesses
1) The planning of the space have became more logical since there is no second basement floor anymore. The previous design made a lot of dark spaces below which this new design tries to improve it.
2) The pottery space have been located on top to let it be more visible to the public. This will allow natural light into their space. Besides, people can see how the pots and plates are made when they pass by.
3) The cafe and shops are placed together to allow people at the subway entrance get more variety of things to see and do instead of just going to the art shop.
1) There is lesser connection to the hall since this new design doesn't use its basement anymore. The only connection is the toilet which is not that significant.

2) Although the second basement has been removed, the overall experience of the space still requires more design changes. The space doesn't seem to have a logical flow to it and it fills like it is placed randomly with no connection.

3) This design still doesn't have the village like atmosphere like the pottery space. It feels like a whole instead of individual spaces. Hence, I have to study more precedents on how village spaces disconnect or come together.

Basement

This is an improvement from the previous one. The form is slightly different but the overall concept is still the same. For this one, there will only one basement left and the pottery spaces are moved to the top floor.
