BEING A POTTER

Due to being my first time creating a pottery space. I had to understand what are the necessary spaces needed in a pottery studio. Therefore, I decided to take 2 days course in pottery making as a way to understand more about pottery and the space of it. It may not be a full experience but it managed to give me some idea.

The short course was held privately in a housing area. The artist is a mom of two and the studio space that she and I used is a small shed that is located behind her house. At first, I noticed the studio was quite small but I realize it was well equipped and it gave me enough information about what is needed in a pottery space.

STRETFORD

In Stretford Hall, there is an art studio located behind the building. However, I noticed the artworks created are mostly visualizations and I was hoping to bring in a new medium into this art community which is pottery making. Due to how small the existing studio space is, I decided to move them into a new space in my building which will positioned closely to the pottery spaces. From there, the artist of different skills could work together and this might helps inspire one another during the process.

Also, during the interactive survey activity, I received some comments about wanting to have an art space in Stretford that is accessible for all. Therefore, I decided to bring in pottery making since it is such a friendly medium and it ties to the restaurant idea I have quite well.

THE VOICES

It would be nice to have a creative space for my kids to have fun!

Stretford has very few art places. I have to travel outside of Stretford to get involved in art like pottery!

I'm bored of shopping, I want to do something creative instead!

THE BEAUTY OF POTTERY

This kind of art form may look soft and vulnerable but it is capable of making all kind of objects such as plates, cups, spoons, knifes, pots, tiles, jewelries and many more.

In addition, using pottery plates and pots can generate a different level of appearance to the food we eat, allowing us to appreciate the food that is being cook and presented.

Potteries are not only used to store or serve food but it could be used to grow plants too. Besides, tiny pots can be used to grow herbs as well as other small vegetables too.

THE PURPOSE

The relationship between food and pottery has been relatively close since the prehistoric periods. It is no coincidence that the usage of pottery started during the same time as agriculture farming. Since food grown had to be stored or served to the public, potteries were then invented to fulfill these purposes. Sometimes, the design of the potteries depends on the purpose and symbolism of it. For instance, potteries with plain design are usually used in households and the ones with intricate designs are used for rituals or ceremonials. Nowadays, pottery has been evolved to be able to look into all kinds of shapes, textures and colors. Hence, this has also managed to enhance the visual presentation of the food served due to how unique the pots and plates are.
